Installation, Care and Finishing of Post Defense™ Turned Porch Posts

Caution: The precision machined edges of Poly-Classic Craftsman column components can be extremely sharp. Use of appropriate personal protection equipment is required.

1
Porch posts are not designed to be used in a free standing application. An internal structural support will be required on free standing applications. Top must be completely covered & sealed to prevent moisture from entering top of post.

2
If the porch post is not factory primed, it must be primed on all sides and the ends immediately upon delivery with a high-quality acrylic primer. The porch post must not be cut or trimmed from the bottom–the moisture barrier seal must be left intact. Any trimming must be from the top end of the porch post to maintain the warranty. All surfaces of the post including the top and bottom of post must be painted with two coats of premium quality paint immediately before exposure to the elements and prior to installation. In addition to the two topcoats, the bottom of the post must be completely covered with caulking and an aluminum or plastic post plinth must be installed under the post.

3
Store in a clean, dry area, not in damp, moist, or extremely humid environments. Wood is hygroscopic and dimensionally influenced by changes in moisture content of its surrounding environment.

4
Mark the location of post on beam [a] and platform, [b] then measure each post height from beam to platform [c]. Cut to length [d] minus space for plastic plinth, elevated bracket, or aluminum plinth on bottom of post.

5
Drill platform for plinth anchoring screw [e]. Drive screw to proper depth [f]. Test connection before attaching to post [g]. If using an elevated bracket or aluminum plinth, follow the manufacturers anchoring instructions.

6

Attach plinth to post bottom [h], erect post and drive into position under beam and onto plinth anchoring screw [i]. Drill holes for attaching post to beam, then caulk [j] before using screws to secure.

7
All surfaces must be primed, and ends must be sealed with caulk.

8
Field repairs and touchups are the responsibility of the installing contractor and painter. Field touchups shall include the filling of nail or screw holes, refinishing of raw surfaces resulting from job filling, repair of job-inflicted scratches and mars, and the final cleaning of surfaces prior to painting.

9
Surfaces to be painted must be thoroughly dry and free of dust, dirt, oil, grease, wax, chalk, and other contaminants.

10
Temperature and humidity have a major effect on drying and may affect paint film characteristics. Paint should be applied at product, surface, and air temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit unless the product label specifies differently. Relative humidity should be below 85%.

11
Primer is formulated to provide a high-quality base for a wide variety of commercially available topcoats with good resultant adhesion and durability. Because it is designed to accept topcoats, a primer by nature is highly filled (flat) and will chalk and break down slowly with UV exposure if not topcoated within a short time span. Two coats of high-quality acrylic paint must be applied prior to installation. Each coat of paint should be applied evenly. Make certain that the surfaces are dry before applying another coat. Again, be sure to apply paint in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

12
Routine painting and maintenance must be performed as necessary to maintain a properly painted and sealed surface.

Intalling Optional Rail

Cut rail and balusters to length and prime all sides. Seal ends with silicon or exterior-grade caulk.* If attaching rail with L-brackets, remember that all holes drilled into the post should be caulked* before placing screws, and any areas that are chiseled for the brackets should be primed* before attaching.

To maintain manufacturer’s warranty:

Porch posts are not designed to be in a free standing application. An internal structural support will be required on free standing applications. Any trimming must be from the top end of the porch post. All wood surfaces must be primed, ends must be sealed with caulk, and a high-quality exterior topcoat applied. A plastic plinth, elevated bracket, or aluminum plinth must be used between post and platform. Top must be completely covered & sealed to prevent moisture from entering top of post.
